Mast cells
Mast cells are formed during blood formation in the bone marrow and belong to the white blood cells.
Mast cells play an important role in the immune defence. They are found in most tissues of the body, especially those that interact with the outside world, such as the lungs, gastrointestinal tract and skin.
When a mast cell ist activated by a trigger, it releases many mediators (chemicals that set off processes that lead to symptoms). Histamine is one of over 200 mediators that mast cells can release.
Mast cell diseases occur when these cells do not behave normally and overreact.

Mastocytosis
Mastocytosis is a disease in which there is an unusual proliferation of altered mast cells in one or more organs in the body.
Cutaneous mastocytosis (affecting the skin) occurs mainly in children.
Systemic mastocytosis, which can affect various organs, is predominantly diagnosed in adult patients.
In the majority of adult patients, the point mutation D816V in the KIT gene is detected.

MCAS
Patients with mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) can suffer from various symptoms caused by overactive mast cells.
Taking medicines that block the mast cell mediators can often bring about an improvement.
Diagnosing MCAS is not always easy, even for doctors. They observe the appearance of the symptoms, the effect of the medicines, and perform special tests to piece together the whole picture and treat the disease effectively.

HαT
Hereditary Alpha Tryptasemia (HαT) is a common genetic trait found in about 5% of the studied populations.
It’s caused by having extra copies of a gene called TPSAB1, which makes a protein called α-tryptase. HαT can lead to various symptoms.
Up to two-thirds of patients with HαT do not experience any significant symptoms. However, in certain situations it may increase the risk of severe allergic reactions such as anaphylaxis.
